After starting this blog, one word kept popping up again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nStock.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
People said things like \u201cthe stock market is up\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m investing in stocks.\u201d
But I realized I didn\u2019t really know what a stock actually was. So I asked my dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\u201cWhat is<\/em> a stock, exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nA stock is a piece of a company<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
That was the first thing I learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s say a company \u2014 like Roblox \u2014 wants to raise money to grow. Instead of taking out a loan, it can \u201cgo public\u201d and offer shares of the company to regular people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each share represents a tiny slice of ownership.
If there are 1 million shares and you own 1 share, you technically own 1 out of a million parts of that company.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIt doesn\u2019t mean you can walk into Roblox HQ and start giving orders.
But it does<\/em> mean you have a claim on the company\u2019s profits, and sometimes, even a vote in big decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nReal companies, real ownership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
At first, this felt strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I thought \u201cinvesting\u201d was just about clicking buttons on an app and watching numbers go up or down.
But now I realized it\u2019s not just numbers. Stocks represent real companies \u2014 with employees, products, buildings, and goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThat means when I buy a share of Apple or Nike or Nintendo, I\u2019m not just betting on a brand.
I\u2019m becoming one of the millions of owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\nEven if it\u2019s a small part, it still counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nWhy would anyone want to own a stock?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Good question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here are a few reasons people buy stocks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- They believe the company will grow.<\/strong>
If the company becomes more valuable, the stock price may go up \u2014 and you can sell it for more than you paid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n- Some companies share profits.<\/strong>
That\u2019s called a dividend<\/strong> \u2014 a small payment some companies give to shareholders regularly. I\u2019ll write more about this in a future post.<\/li>\n\n\n\n- They want to feel connected.<\/strong>
Some people invest in companies they admire or use every day. Like owning Tesla because you love the mission, or Disney because you grew up with it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nNot all stocks are the same<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
This part surprised me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some companies are big and stable, like Microsoft or Coca-Cola. Others are newer and riskier, like small tech startups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some stocks are expensive \u2014 over $1,000 per share.
Others are just a few dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBut price doesn\u2019t always mean value. What matters is how strong the company is and how much it can grow over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nOwning a stock makes you think differently<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Ever since I started looking into stocks, I\u2019ve been thinking differently when I walk through a mall or scroll through YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nWho owns this company?
Are they making money?
What would happen if I owned a share?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\nI don\u2019t see products and logos the same way anymore.
I see businesses.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nWhat I Learned<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
- A stock is not just a number \u2014 it\u2019s a piece of a real company.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Owning even one share makes you a part-owner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Companies sell stock to raise money, and people buy stock to grow their money.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Thinking like an owner makes me see the world differently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
