Investors watch it every day. News anchors talk about it like it\u2019s the whole market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>So what <em>is<\/em> the S&amp;P 500?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It\u2019s not a company. It\u2019s an index.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 is a list of 500 of the biggest and most important public companies in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S&amp;P stands for <strong>Standard &amp; Poor\u2019s<\/strong>, the company that created the index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;500&#8221; means it includes 500 different companies.<br>These are usually companies that are leaders in their industries \u2014 like Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does it matter?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 is like a <strong>scoreboard<\/strong> for the U.S. stock market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the S&amp;P 500 goes up, it usually means the market is doing well.<br>If it goes down, people might worry about the economy or company profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why investors, news channels, and even government officials watch it so closely.<br>It\u2019s a quick way to check how hundreds of companies are doing all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It represents almost the whole market<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are over 5,000 public companies in the U.S., but the 500 in the S&amp;P make up about <strong>80 percent<\/strong> of the total value of the stock market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means if you follow the S&amp;P 500, you\u2019re basically following the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s why ETFs like <strong>SPY<\/strong> exist.<br>They give you exposure to all 500 of those companies in just one trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some companies matter more than others<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all 500 companies are equal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 is <strong>weighted by market cap<\/strong>, which means bigger companies count more in the index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Apple is the most valuable company in the world.<br>So its stock price moves have a bigger effect on the S&amp;P 500 than a smaller company like Etsy or Clorox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So\u2026 can the S&amp;P 500 go bankrupt?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 isn\u2019t a company. It doesn\u2019t make products or hire employees.<br>It\u2019s just a list, created by people who update it as companies grow, shrink, or drop out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If one company does badly, it might get removed and replaced by a stronger one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s another reason people trust it.<br>It constantly updates to reflect the strongest companies in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What I Learned<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The S&amp;P 500 is a list of the 500 biggest public companies in the U.S.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It acts like a scoreboard for the entire stock market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ETFs like SPY are based on this index.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The index changes over time as companies rise and fall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Next time<\/strong>:<br>While I was learning about SPY and the S&amp;P 500, I found out there are actually many different kinds of S&amp;P 500 ETFs \u2014 each with its own rules, fees, and features.<br>In my next post, I\u2019ll go deeper into the details and explain what I discovered when I compared them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After I learned about SPY and ETFs, I kept hearing about the S&amp;P 500.
